Whale sharks · dives · dunes
Inhambane Coast
Mozambique's mid-coast. Tofo is the cult dive town — whale sharks, mantas. Barra is dunes and warm-water lagoons. South of that, the lesser-known spots — Zavora, Pomene, Quissico — where the road quiets and the campsites empty.
Inhambane is where Moçambique's dive culture lives. Tofo Beach has been a backpacker temple for two decades — for good reason. Whale sharks pass close to shore from October through March. Mantas year-round. Octopus and reef life that takes weeks to learn properly. Barra, ten minutes north, is the quieter alternative — wide beach, warm lagoons, palms. South of Tofo, the road thins out. Zavora and Pomene are still wild in the right way; Quissico looks across one of the country's prettiest coastal lagoons. We travel this stretch by 4x4, often pairing it with a few days in Maputo at the start or end.
